IT’S BONNY BY THE SEA
90 MIN – DRAMA – IN DEVELOPMENT
A deeply human social drama exploring heartache, hope and self-care set in the brooding coastal town of Newbiggin-by- the-Sea, Northumberland. A tragedy with an undercurrent of courage, It’s Bonny by the Sea explores the human response to sorrow and ends on a pragmatic yet positive note. The central message of the film is a lesson on self-care and perspective: when faced with hardships we must hold on to perspective, nurture ourselves and create our own hope in the pursuit of happiness.
Polish care worker Irena arrives to the quiet coastal town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea looking for breathing space from her failing marriage but instead she finds Alex, a complicated young man stunted by his small-town existence. Brought together through their mutual care for Alex’s nan Sally, a simple but wise old woman trapped by Alzheimer’s disease, the pair come to learn some of life’s most valuable lessons.
“The character interactions feel precise and carefully realised; this is a writer with a good eye for the finer details. The smaller beats are patiently constructed without feeling erroneous… the pacing is restrained. It’s refreshing to see a script that’s not in too much of a rush. There’s also some skill in the room made for some subtler comic beats… capitalising on quieter observational humour”. – Script Reader for the BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum
